LSU at Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — Rylan Lujo homered and drove in five runs to lead Georgia to a 12-1 victory over LSU in seven innings Sunday at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall, completing a three-game Southeastern Conference sweep.
Lujo, playing center field and second base, went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs. He singled in the second inning, drove in a run on a single in the fourth and delivered the decisive blow in the fifth with a grand slam that stretched Georgia’s lead to 11-1. Lujo had collected at least one hit in his previous four games, including a 2-for-5 effort Saturday against LSU.
Georgia starter Caden Aoki earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits over five innings while striking out seven. Daniel Jackson contributed a two-run home run in the fourth inning and finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Joe Nottingham and Bryce Calloway each tossed a scoreless inning of relief, with Nottingham striking out two and Calloway fanning two while giving up one hit.
LSU, now 29-24 overall and 13-17 in the SEC, managed only five hits and struck out 11 times. The Tigers scored their lone run in the third inning when Josh Ruckert singled, advanced to third on a single by Steven Braun and came home on a base hit by Paxton Serna Jr. That cut the deficit to 4-1, but Georgia answered immediately.
The Bulldogs improved to 41-11 and 18-9 in conference play. They broke the game open early with a four-run second inning. Lujo singled and Kenny Ishikawa followed with a single. After a walk loaded the bases, Henry Hudson grounded out to score Lujo. Slade Black then singled to bring home Ishikawa. Jacob Jack singled to center field, driving in two more runs for a 4-0 lead.
Georgia added two more in the fourth. Tre Phelps singled and Jack homered to right field, his second hit of the game, to make it 6-1. Henry OShaughnessy doubled and scored on Lujo’s single to push the lead to 7-1.
The pivotal moment came in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs after Phelps doubled, Jack was intentionally walked and OShaughnessy walked, Lujo crushed a grand slam to left field, giving Georgia an 11-1 advantage. Lujo’s blast was the third hit of the inning and capped a five-run frame.
LSU’s pitching struggled throughout. Starter Casan Evans lasted only 1 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Grant Fontenot pitched a scoreless sixth inning but gave up an unearned run after a fielding error led to a double by Cole Johnson that scored pinch runner Wynn.
Georgia tacked on another run in the sixth. With two outs, Wynn reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double by Johnson, who pinch-hit and drove in his first run of the game. The Bulldogs finished with 14 hits, with Phelps and Ishikawa each collecting two hits.
The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule, as Georgia led by 11 runs after the Tigers batted in the top of the seventh. LSU went down in order in the final frame, with reliever Nottingham striking out two and inducing a fly out and a ground out to end it.
Georgia’s sweep extended its winning streak to four games and kept the Bulldogs atop the SEC standings heading into a road series at Auburn next weekend. LSU will return home to face Florida.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Georgia 7, LSU 6. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Georgia with a 53.60 percent probability to win. Georgia had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 2 1/2.
