UNLV at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — UNLV visits Fresno State on Saturday, May 9, in a Mountain West baseball matchup at Selland Arena, as the Runnin’ Rebels look to capitalize on their superior record against a Bulldogs team mired in a difficult season.

UNLV (26-22) enters the game after a 5-2 loss to BYU on Tuesday. The Runnin’ Rebels have split their last six contests, showing flashes of offensive power in wins over Milwaukee and Nevada but also suffering lopsided defeats. Fresno State (13-32) lost 6-2 at Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday, continuing a season defined by inconsistency; the Bulldogs have dropped six of their last seven games.

The teams met Friday, with Fresno State winning the series opener. Saturday’s game is the second of a three-game set.

A player to watch for UNLV is pitcher Felix Ong. The right-hander has been effective recently, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts against BYU on Tuesday. In his last five appearances, two of which covered multiple innings, Ong has allowed only two earned runs over 8.1 innings while striking out 10.

For Fresno State, pitcher Justin Cuellar has been a bright spot. He threw 4.0 shutout innings with four strikeouts at Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday, allowing no hits. Cuellar has been steady in longer outings but also has been susceptible to big innings, as evidenced by allowing four earned runs in 4.0 innings at Cal State Northridge on April 29.

UNLV’s recent results include a 2-1 series win over Milwaukee (May 1-3) and a 2-1 series loss at Nevada (April 24-26). Fresno State was swept at Washington State (May 1-3) and lost a three-game home series to San Diego State (April 24-26), though they did win at Long Beach State on April 21.

An Interstat game simulation projects a 4-2 UNLV victory.

After Saturday’s game, the teams conclude the series Sunday. UNLV then returns home to face San Diego State for three games starting May 14. Fresno State hosts Cal Poly on May 12 before traveling to San Jose State for a three-game series beginning May 14.
