Southern Mississippi at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Camden Clark threw six no-hit innings and the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles rolled to an 11-1 victory over the James Madison Dukes on Saturday at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.

Clark, who struck out nine batters and walked none, allowed no hits and no earned runs in his dominant outing. He retired the first 12 batters he faced and faced only one batter over the minimum until exiting after the sixth inning. The performance followed his previous start May 2 against Louisiana-Monroe, when he tossed seven innings of three-hit ball with 15 strikeouts in a 3-1 win.

Southern Mississippi, which improved to 36-14 overall, took command early and broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. After loading the bases with no outs on a walk, a single and a bunt that resulted in a fielding error by third baseman Jack Guerrero, the Golden Eagles cashed in. Lawson Odom lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Matthew Russo for the game’s first run. Seth Smith then singled to left-center to bring home Drey Barrett. Joey Urban followed with a three-run home run to center field, all three runs unearned, to make it 5-0.

Urban finished 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Ben Higdon went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. His three-run homer in the eighth inning — also to center field — extended the lead to 11-0 after the Golden Eagles had added a run in the sixth and another in the eighth.

Southern Mississippi’s pitching staff combined to hold James Madison to three hits. After Clark’s six perfect innings, Teague Broadhead pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout. Sam Mitchell allowed one run in the eighth before Kevin Farr recorded the final out of that inning. The Dukes managed their only run in the bottom of the eighth when Jack Anderson scored on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

James Madison starter Holden McKinney took the loss, allowing seven hits and one earned run — though five runs crossed under his watch — in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one. Max Kuhle threw two innings of relief, allowing two hits and one earned run.

The Golden Eagles pounded out 11 hits and drew eight walks. They also took advantage of two James Madison errors. Drey Barrett added two hits and an RBI. Kyle Morrison doubled and singled, driving in a run in the sixth.

The Dukes fell to 20-28. They managed only three hits — a single by Wyatt Campbell in the fifth, a single by Kyle Langley in the sixth, and a single by Reece Moody in the seventh. Moody also stole second base but was stranded. James Madison struck out 13 times in the game.

Saturday’s win gave Southern Mississippi a 2-0 lead in the three-game Sun Belt series after the Golden Eagles won the opener 8-5 on Friday. The series concludes Sunday at Eagle Field. The Golden Eagles next host Georgia Southern for a three-game set starting Thursday, while James Madison travels to Old Dominion for a Thursday-Saturday series.
