Washington State at Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Interstat) — The Washington State Cougars and Air Force Falcons meet Saturday afternoon in a day-night doubleheader at Falcon Baseball Field.

Washington State (26-23) carries momentum into the twin bill after an 11-2 victory over Air Force (23-23) on Friday night. The Cougars are seeking consecutive wins against the Falcons for the first time this season, while Air Force aims to avoid a third straight loss overall.

Friday’s victory featured a dominant pitching performance from Cougars right-hander Nick Lewis, who threw seven shutout innings, allowing no hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts. The junior has been outstanding over his last four starts, going 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA over 29 innings, striking out 25 batters. Lewis also threw a complete-game shutout against Fresno State on May 1.

For Air Force, Aiden Poe will take the mound Saturday. The Falcons right-hander struggled Friday, allowing three earned runs on five hits over five innings in the loss. Poe has been inconsistent this season, posting a 5.79 ERA over his last five appearances, though he threw 6⅔ scoreless innings against Grand Canyon on April 17.

Other key contributors from Friday’s game include Washington State right fielder Max Hartman, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Air Force catcher Walker Zapp went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and shortstop Ben Niednagel homered.

Washington State has won three of its last five games, including a 17-0 rout of Fresno State on May 2. Air Force has split its last 10 games, but the Falcons’ offense erupted for 20 runs against San Jose State on April 24.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 Air Force win, and the ELO system gives the Falcons a 54.9% chance of victory.

First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 68 degrees.

Both teams also play Sunday. Washington State returns home Tuesday to host Seattle, while Air Force travels to Oregon State on May 14.
