Xavier at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — Xavier and Butler will meet in a Big East doubleheader Saturday at Bulldog Park, with the Musketeers seeking to build momentum after a series-opening win and the Bulldogs looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Rain is in the forecast, with temperatures around 66 degrees.

Xavier (22-27) enters on a high after a 16-6 rout of Saint John’s on April 26 and an 8-4, 10-inning win at Georgia Tech on May 1. The Musketeers have dropped six of their last eight, however, including Sunday’s 14-6 loss at Georgia Tech.

Butler (17-28) has lost four of six, including a 12-1 defeat Wednesday at Toledo. The Bulldogs’ last win came May 3, a 9-2 victory over Seton Hall.

Xavier first baseman Tommy Townsend is a key bat to watch. In the loss at Georgia Tech, Townsend went 2 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Over his last 10 games, the junior has four homers and 11 RBIs. He also had a two-homer, four-RBI game April 26 against Saint John’s.

For Butler, pitcher Zak White is expected to see action from the bullpen. The sophomore threw a scoreless inning against Toledo on Wednesday, striking out two. He allowed three earned runs without recording an out April 21 at Eastern Illinois.

The teams opened the series Friday at Bulldog Park. Xavier won that game behind strong pitching and timely hitting. The Musketeers are projected by Interstat’s game simulator to win Saturday’s opener 5-4.

The game is the second of a three-game weekend set. The teams meet again Sunday. Xavier then returns home for a three-game series against Creighton starting May 14. Butler travels to Saint John’s for a three-game set beginning the same day.

The Bulldogs are 8-12 at home this season, while Xavier is 6-14 on the road.
