Texas State at Arkansas State
JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — Arkansas State right-hander Ckyler Tengler will look to duplicate his historic outing when the Red Wolves host Texas State in a key Sun Belt Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium–Kell Field.
Tengler, who tossed a nine-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 12-0 win at Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday, anchors an Arkansas State squad that enters play at 28-19 overall. The Red Wolves took the series opener Friday against the Bobcats by an unlisted score.
Texas State (28-21) counters with outfielder Rashawn Galloway, who homered and drove in three runs in Tuesday’s 9-6 win over Baylor. The senior went 2-for-5 in that victory and has three home runs in his past six games, though the Bobcats have dropped four of their last five contests overall.
Game time temperature is forecast at 69 degrees with clear skies. Arkansas State leads the season series 1-0 after Friday’s result. The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-3 Red Wolves victory, though the Interstat ELO system gives Texas State a 56.7 percent probability to win.
Texas State dropped a weekend series to South Alabama last week, losing 7-4, 6-4 and 6-2. The Bobcats also fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-2 on April 28 before rebounding to beat Baylor. Galloway has been a bright spot, hitting .333 over his last five games with two homers and six RBIs.
Arkansas State enters on a high note after its blowout win at Little Rock. Prior to that, the Red Wolves lost 5-4 at Old Dominion on May 3, but won 6-0 on May 1. They took two of three from Louisiana-Lafayette at home April 24-26, and pounded Central Arkansas 20-10 on April 21.
Tengler has not allowed an earned run in 12 1/3 innings across his past three appearances, striking out 12. His no-hitter Tuesday lowered his season ERA to a team-best mark among Red Wolves starters.
Texas State will send a pitcher to be determined. The Bobcats used Titan Targac for two scoreless innings of relief against Baylor, striking out four.
The game carries postseason implications as both teams jockey for Sun Belt tournament positioning. Texas State visits Arkansas State again Sunday, then travels to Texas-San Antonio on Tuesday. Arkansas State plays host to Texas State again Sunday before a midweek game at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
