Winthrop at High Point
HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — Ty Brachbill threw a complete game, scattering four hits and striking out five, as High Point defeated Winthrop 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at George S. Erath Field at Coy O. Williard Baseball Stadium.
The Panthers improved to 33-17 overall and 33-17 in all competitions, while the Eagles dropped to 30-20.
Brachbill’s performance was the cornerstone of the win. He allowed two earned runs, walked none and retired the final 13 batters he faced after Winthrop mounted an early lead. The right-hander lowered his season ERA with his second straight complete-game victory, following an eight-inning shutout of Longwood on May 2.
High Point’s offense supported Brachbill with an 11-hit attack, keyed by a four-run third inning that erased a one-run deficit.
SeoJun Oh went 1 for 4 with a two-run home run in the seventh inning and finished with two RBIs. Jake McCarter drove in two runs on two hits, including an RBI double in the second inning. Jace Kohler added two RBIs on one hit, while Caleb Hammond collected two hits and an RBI. Willie Ponce led the Panthers with three hits.
Winthrop scored first, plating a run in the top of the first inning. Alex Natividad was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by Jaylen Hernandez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luke Wouters.
The Eagles added a second run in the second inning. Chazz Grossington singled, advanced on a walk and a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a groundout by Jack Crowley.
High Point answered in the bottom of the second. Oh walked, and McCarter doubled to left center to drive him in, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Panthers broke the game open in the third. After a walk and a strikeout, High Point loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice and another walk. McCarter singled to left center to tie the game at 2. The next batter, Kohler, doubled down the right-field line, scoring two runs and giving High Point a 4-2 lead. Hammond followed with an RBI double to make it 5-2.
Winthrop pulled within 5-3 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Grossington, but that was the last time they threatened. Brachbill allowed only one more hit the rest of the way.
The Eagles’ starter Luke Earnhardt lasted only 2 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on no hits but five walks. Walker Brodt relieved and threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up no hits while striking out two, but he was not involved in the decision.
High Point sealed the victory in the seventh. Ponce singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Oh’s home run to right center, making it 7-3.
Brachbill set down the Eagles in order in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, finishing with 116 pitches. Winthrop’s last baserunner came in the sixth when Grossington walked, but he was left stranded.
The victory gave High Point a 2-0 lead in the three-game Big South series after the Panthers won 9-8 in 10 innings on Friday.
Winthrop’s Hernandez had two hits, while Grossington went 2 for 3 with an RBI. The Eagles managed only four hits total.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of High Point 6, Winthrop 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave High Point a 64.40 percent probability to win.
