Kennesaw State at Jacksonville State

KENNESAW STATE AT JACKSONVILLE STATE PREVIEW

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State open a pivotal Conference USA series Friday night at Rudy Abbott Field, with the league-leading Gamecocks looking to maintain their dominance against an Owls team fighting for postseason positioning.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT under cloudy skies, with temperatures around 69 degrees.

Jacksonville State (38-10) enters with the conference’s best record and a 10-game home winning streak. The Gamecocks took two of three at Missouri State last weekend, winning 11-4 and 10-2 before dropping the finale 10-2. Shortstop Caleb Johnson has been a consistent run producer, going 10-for-26 over his last seven games with two home runs and 12 RBIs. He drove in three runs in the series opener against the Bears.

Kennesaw State (23-22) arrives after an emotional 10-9, 11-inning win Tuesday over Georgia State. Right-hander Cole Royer earned the victory, tossing three innings of one-run relief. Royer has been effective lately, allowing two earned runs over 8 ⅓ innings across his last four appearances, striking out four with a 1.08 WHIP in that span. The Owls have won five of their last six, including a sweep of Sam Houston last weekend.

The Gamecocks have won 11 of their last 13 overall and sit atop the C-USA standings. They counter with a pitching staff that has posted a 3.88 ERA during their current hot stretch. Kennesaw State’s bullpen has been stretched thin, with several multi-inning relievers used heavily in recent midweek games.

A simulation by Interstat projects a tight contest, with Jacksonville State prevailing 7-6. The Gamecocks hold a significant edge in run differential at plus-147 compared to Kennesaw State’s minus-18. Jacksonville State has also been strong at home, where they are 18-3 this season.

The series continues Saturday and Sunday before Kennesaw State returns home to host Missouri State, while Jacksonville State hosts Auburn in a midweek tilt before traveling to Dallas Baptist.
