Prairie View at Alcorn State
MONTGOMERY, Miss. (Interstat) — The Prairie View Panthers take on the Alcorn State Braves on Friday at 6 p.m. at Foster Baseball Field at McGowan Stadium in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup between the league’s two most struggling teams.
Prairie View (8-34) enters riding a 7-16 loss Tuesday at Texas A&M. The Panthers have dropped 16 of their last 18 games overall, though they have shown occasional offensive pop, scoring 15 runs in a win over Alabama A&M on May 1 and 12 in a victory over Texas Southern on April 26.
Alcorn State (4-38) has lost nine straight, including a 6-2 defeat Monday at Jackson State in which the Braves managed only one hit. The Braves’ last win came April 27, a 12-11 slugfest against Grambling. Alcorn State has allowed double-digit runs in eight of its last 11 games.
Outfielder Michael Burroughs is a key bat for Prairie View. In Tuesday’s loss to Texas A&M, Burroughs went 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Over his last 10 games, he has three home runs and 15 RBIs, though he also has nine strikeouts in that span. His power gives the Panthers a threat in the middle of the order.
Alcorn State counter with Kanious Davis, a two-way player who has been its most effective pitcher of late. Against Jackson State on Monday, Davis threw six innings of two-hit ball, allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts. He also played outfield in that game, going 0 for 3 at the plate. On the mound, Davis has a 2.45 ERA over his last two appearances covering 7 innings.
The teams met Feb. 14 in Prairie View, Texas, with the Panthers winning 15-10.
The forecast calls for 69 degrees and cloudy skies at first pitch.
Interstat’s game simulator projects Prairie View with a 74.4 percent win probability, predicting a 3-1 final score.
