Niagara at Manhattan

FISHKILL, N.Y. (Interstat) — Tyler ViVacqua went 5 for 6 with a home run and four RBIs, and the Niagara Purple Eagles outlasted the Manhattan Jaspers 15-11 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game that stretched from afternoon into evening Friday at Dutchess Stadium.

Niagara improved to 23-16-1 overall, while Manhattan fell to 17-26.

The Purple Eagles erupted for four runs in the top of the 10th inning to break an 11-11 tie after the Jaspers had rallied from a 6-0 deficit earlier in the game.

ViVacqua, a second baseman, singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th and finished a triple shy of the cycle. He also homered in the third inning, a two-run shot that capped a four-run frame for Niagara. Jason Green added three hits and three RBIs, including a tiebreaking double in the eighth. Curtis McKay had three hits and two RBIs, Rees Kozar drove in three runs with two hits and Nick Cote contributed two hits and an RBI.

Manhattan’s Colin Basehore homered and drove in two runs, and Andreaus Lewis also went deep, finishing with three hits and an RBI.

Niagara jumped ahead 6-0 through the top of the third, scoring four runs in the inning on a two-run double by Cote, a wild-pitch run and ViVacqua’s homer. The Jaspers answered with six runs in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a throwing error and three more unearned runs to take a 6-5 lead. Hunter Sute’s fielder’s choice drove in two runs, and Trevor Hansen, Jack Brinker and Ryan Lordier each had RBI hits in the frame.

The teams traded blows over the middle innings. Niagara regained a 9-6 lead in the fifth on Green’s two-run single, but Manhattan scored twice in the sixth on Lewis’ solo homer and a wild pitch, then took a 10-9 lead on a walk by Basehore and a bases-loaded walk by Brinker.

Niagara tied the game in the eighth when Green doubled home Nate Milk, and the Purple Eagles went ahead again in the ninth on ViVacqua’s RBI single that scored Elijha Hammill. But Manhattan answered in the bottom of the eighth when Basehore led off with a homer to right, making it 11-11 and setting the stage for extra innings.

In the 10th, Niagara’s Shawn Cameron walked to lead off, and Jacob Brooks singled. After a popout, McKay singled to center to score Cameron. McKay stole second, and Kozar doubled to right-center to drive in two more runs. ViVacqua then singled in Kozar for the final margin.

Manhattan threatened in the bottom of the 10th but went down in order, with Andrew Damiani closing the game for Niagara after pitching three innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts.

Both teams combined for 37 hits, with Niagara collecting 21 and Manhattan 16.

Niagara continues its series at Manhattan on Saturday and Sunday before returning home to host Mercyhurst on Tuesday. Manhattan will face the Purple Eagles again Saturday and Sunday, then travel to Long Island on Tuesday and Iona next week.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Niagara 8, Manhattan 4, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Niagara a 56.70 percent probability to win.
