UCLA at Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The top-ranked UCLA Bruins visit the Loyola Marymount Lions on Tuesday at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in a nonconference matchup pitting one of the nation’s hottest teams against a club searching for consistency.
UCLA (43-4) enters riding a three-game winning streak after sweeping Michigan State on the road last weekend. The Bruins outscored the Spartans 21-15 in the series, capped by a 13-11 victory Sunday in which first baseman Mulivai Levu went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Levu, a player to watch, has homered in three of his last four games and driven in seven runs over that span. In the series opener May 1, he went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 4-1 win.
Loyola Marymount (12-37) has lost seven of its last eight games, including a 6-4 defeat at Pacific on Sunday. Right-hander Avery Laine, a player to watch for the Lions, worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on no hits with two strikeouts in that outing. Laine has struggled with control recently, posting an ERA above 7.00 over his last four appearances.
The Bruins took the most recent meeting between the teams, a 6-2 home win March 24. UCLA’s offense has been potent all season, averaging more than eight runs per game. The Lions have been outscored by an average of more than four runs per contest.
UCLA’s schedule ahead includes a three-game home series against Oregon beginning Friday. Loyola Marymount opens a three-game home set against Saint Mary’s on Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-2 UCLA victory.
