California at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The California Golden Bears and Pacific Tigers meet Tuesday at Klein Family Field in a midweek nonconference matchup with both teams looking to build momentum after series wins.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 60 degrees.

California (24-23) took the finale of a three-game home series against Virginia Tech on Sunday, winning 9-4, but dropped the first two games of that set. The Golden Bears have been inconsistent, winning only four of their last 10 games.

Pacific (20-24) swept Loyola Marymount in a three-game series over the weekend, outscoring the Lions 29-13. The Tigers have won four of their last five and appear to be peaking as the postseason approaches.

Players to watch

California catcher Hideki Prather is the Golden Bears’ most dangerous hitter. In Sunday’s win over Virginia Tech, he went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs. However, Prather has been streaky: he was hitless in his previous two games (0-for-8) before that outburst, and has gone 0-for-4 or worse in four of his last 10 starts. Over that stretch, he’s batting .267 with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Pacific counters with right-hander Garret Plata, who has been dominant over his last three starts. Plata threw 7 1/3 innings Sunday against Loyola Marymount, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out seven. In his previous two outings, he combined for 12 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts, allowing just two hits. Over his last three starts, the Tigers’ ace has a 1.40 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

Projected outcome

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for Pacific.

Upcoming schedules

California travels to Virginia for a three-game series beginning Friday. Pacific hosts San Diego for a three-game set starting Friday, then travels to Cal State Bakersfield on May 12.

Tuesday’s game marks the only scheduled meeting this season between the two programs.
