North Florida at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The North Florida Ospreys visit the Florida Gators on Tuesday afternoon at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium, with first pitch scheduled under clear skies and 79-degree temperatures.

North Florida (26-20) enters the nonconference matchup coming off a 10-0 shutout of Jacksonville on Sunday, a game in which right-hander Trevor Nikolis tossed 4 2/3 innings of one-hit scoreless ball with three strikeouts. Nikolis has been a reliable arm for the Ospreys despite a 1-3 record over his past four outings, posting a 3.18 ERA across 17 innings while allowing only three hits in his last two starts combined. He will likely get the ball Tuesday as North Florida looks to build momentum ahead of its final regular-season series at Queens (NC) beginning Friday.

Florida (31-17) counters with right-hander Russell Sandefer, who turned in a dominant performance Sunday at Oklahoma, throwing seven innings of one-run shutout ball while fanning seven in a 13-2 win. Sandefer’s season has been uneven — he allowed five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings against Georgia on April 12, then rebounded with 4 2/3 scoreless frames against Auburn on April 18 before a rough outing against Texas A&M (5 IP, 8 H, 3 ER). Overall, he brings a mid-3s ERA into the game and will face a North Florida lineup that scored 10 runs Sunday but has been inconsistent, averaging 4.2 runs per game over its last 10 contests.

The Gators are riding a two-game winning streak after taking three of four at Oklahoma, including Sunday’s rout in which Hayden Yost homered twice and drove in three runs and Karson Bowen added two homers and three RBIs. Florida’s offense has averaged 7.8 runs per game over its past five, though the pitching staff has surrendered 5.0 or more in five of its last seven.

Tuesday’s game is the only meeting between the intrastate foes this season. The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for North Florida, but the Gators hold a significant home-field advantage and have won five of their last six at McKethan Stadium.

Following Tuesday, Florida opens a three-game home series against Kentucky on Friday, then travels to LSU the following week. North Florida heads to Queens for a three-game set beginning Friday before returning home to face West Georgia.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m. EDT.
