Washington State at Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — Gonzaga looks to continue its recent dominance over Washington State when the Bulldogs host the Cougars on Monday at Washington Trust Field and Patterson Baseball Complex.
First pitch is set for a clear, 82-degree evening, with Gonzaga (28-17) holding a three-game edge in the win column over Washington State (25-22). The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings between the in-state rivals, including a 16-8 victory on April 21 in Pullman and a 19-8 win on March 24 in Spokane.
Gonzaga outfielder Ryder Young enters the game in a power surge. Over his last nine contests, the left fielder has homered four times, including a solo shot Sunday in a 12-4 loss to Santa Clara. Young also went deep twice in the series against the Broncos on Friday and Saturday, and he collected three hits and three RBIs in a win over Loyola Marymount on April 26. In Gonzaga’s 16-8 win over Washington State on April 21, Young went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Washington State will counter with right-hander Luke Meyers, who has been a versatile arm for the Cougars. Meyers threw five innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts in a 5-4 loss to Fresno State on Sunday. He also worked six innings of two-run baseball in a win over New Mexico on April 26 and fired six scoreless innings with four strikeouts against Gardner-Webb on April 11. Meyers has limited effectiveness in relief as well, striking out two in two-thirds of an inning against New Mexico on April 24.
The Cougars enter Monday having split their four-game series with Fresno State, rebounding from Sunday’s loss with a 17-0 win Saturday and a 5-1 victory Friday. The Bulldogs took two of three from Santa Clara over the weekend.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Gonzaga victory.
Both teams look ahead to road conference series this weekend. Washington State travels to Air Force beginning Friday, while Gonzaga opens a three-game set at San Francisco on the same day.
