Murray State at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — Murray State and Purdue are set for a day-night doubleheader Saturday at Alexander Field, with rain and 52-degree temperatures in the forecast.
The Racers (26-18) took the series opener Friday, blanking the Boilermakers (28-15) to seize early momentum. Purdue will look to regroup on its home field against a Murray State squad that won its most recent game, 9-5 over Memphis on Tuesday.
Right-hander Ethan Lyke is a key arm for the Racers. He showed his potential in that win, throwing 3 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out five. But his season has been uneven: he was tagged for four earned runs without recording an out against Mississippi on April 21, and has allowed at least one earned run in three of his last four appearances.
For Purdue, right-hander Graham Kollen has been a stabilizing force. He worked 4 innings in the Boilermakers’ 5-1 win over Southern Indiana on Wednesday, giving up three hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Kollen has been reliable lately, allowing no earned runs in four of his last five outings, though he struggled April 21 against Indiana State, surrendering three earned runs without retiring a batter.
The Boilermakers own a 28-15 record and are coming off a series loss at Southern California, where they dropped three of four. Purdue’s offense has been potent at times, scoring 10 runs in a win over Ohio State on April 17, but inconsistent pitching has been a concern.
Murray State has also shown the ability to score, putting up nine runs against Memphis and 13 in a win over Southern Illinois on April 24. But the Racers have been prone to blowout losses, surrendering 19 runs to Mississippi and 12 to Southeast Missouri State.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Murray State victory.
Saturday’s doubleheader is the second and third games of a weekend series. The teams will play again Sunday. Purdue then hosts Ball State on Tuesday, while Murray State returns home to face Tennessee-Martin.
