Harvard at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. (Interstat) — The Harvard Crimson visit the Princeton Tigers on Saturday for the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Bill Clarke Field, with first pitch scheduled under cloudy skies and a temperature of 62 degrees.

Princeton (14-24) enters the day with a slight edge in the standings despite a losing overall record. The Tigers have won four of their last five, including a 5-1 victory over Siena on Wednesday. Harvard (8-26) has lost seven of its last eight and is coming off a 12-9 defeat at Holy Cross on Tuesday.

The matchup features a key individual battle between Harvard third baseman Jordan Kang and Princeton pitcher James Beasley.

Kang has been the Crimson’s most consistent offensive threat. In Tuesday’s loss at Holy Cross, he went 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Over his last 10 games, Kang has recorded four multi-hit performances and three games with multiple RBIs, though he has also endured stretches of 0-for-4 or 0-for-3 outings against Penn, Dartmouth and Yale.

Beasley will start on the mound for the Tigers after a dominant outing Wednesday, when he pitched six innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out one. The result was a welcome rebound following a rocky April 22 start against Wagner, in which he surrendered five earned runs in three innings. Beasley has allowed four or more earned runs in four of his last six appearances.

Harvard’s offense has shown occasional power but has struggled to string together rallies. The Crimson have scored in double digits only twice this season (Interstat) — a 17-12 win at Massachusetts on April 14 and a 7-6 victory over Dartmouth on April 18. Princeton’s pitching staff has been uneven but has held opponents to two runs or fewer in four of its last seven games.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-2 Princeton victory, with the Tigers holding a 50.70 percent win probability according to its ELO system.

The doubleheader marks the final regular-season meetings between the two programs. Saturday’s opener will set the tone for a critical Ivy League series that could influence postseason positioning for both teams.
