Brown at Penn

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Brown faces Penn in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field, with the Bears looking to build on a 13-9 win over the Quakers less than 24 hours earlier.

The Bears (21-16 overall) carry a potent offense into the matchup, averaging 8.2 runs per game over their last five contests. Penn (17-19) counters with home-field advantage and a projected 67.1 percent win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, though the same simulator forecasts a 7-6 Brown victory.

Weather at game time is expected to be 63 degrees with clouds.

Brown’s lineup features hot-hitting second baseman Mark Henshon, who went 2-for-4 with five RBIs in Friday’s win and is 10-for-21 with eight RBIs over his past five games. The senior has driven in at least one run in three of his last four outings and is hitting .364 over that span.

Penn left fielder Gavin Collins also had a strong showing Friday, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Over his last 10 games, Collins is batting .297 with three homers and 10 RBIs. He drove in four runs in Penn’s 13-7 win at Harvard on April 25.

The Bears took Friday’s series opener 13-9, powered by Henshon’s five-RBI day and a shaky start from Penn’s Marty Coyne, who allowed four earned runs on six hits over six innings. Brown’s Peter Dubie earned the win despite surrendering five earned runs in six innings; Christian Keel closed with two scoreless innings.

Brown has won four of its last six overall, including a 16-8 rout of Columbia on April 29 and a 16-4 win over Cornell on April 25. The Bears are 8-5 on the road this season.

Penn has split its last six, with wins at Harvard in a three-game series April 25-26 and a 12-0 shutout at Princeton on April 18. The Quakers are 10-7 at home.

Brown’s next 10 games include only this doubleheader with Penn. Penn’s schedule is identical.

The doubleheader marks the final regular-season meeting between the teams, both vying for position in the Ivy League standings. Game two is scheduled to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
