Longwood at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — Ty Brachbill pitched eight shutout innings and Caleb Hammond drove in three runs as High Point pounded Longwood 10-0 on Saturday afternoon at George S. Erath Field at Coy O. Williard Baseball Stadium.

The Panthers, who improved to 30-16 overall and bounced back from a 6-5 loss to the Lancers the previous day, erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to break open a scoreless game. High Point finished with 14 hits while holding Longwood to two hits.

Brachbill was dominant, allowing only two hits while striking out seven and walking none over eight innings. He retired 15 straight Lancers at one point and faced just one batter over the minimum. The right-hander’s performance came six days after he allowed five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings against Virginia Military Institute.

The game remained scoreless through three innings as both starters worked efficiently. Longwood’s Jackson Garland matched Brachbill early, striking out seven over 3 1/3 innings, but the Lancers’ bullpen could not contain the Panthers’ bats.

High Point broke through in the fourth. After a single by Adam Kelly and a walk to SeoJun Oh, Jason Allen singled to load the bases. A walk to Oh forced in the first run, and Charlie Carter followed with a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Oh then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Allen. Hammond added an RBI single up the middle to push the lead to 4-0.

Garland was lifted after the first four runs, but the damage continued against reliever Joe Gomez. Matt Ponce singled through the right side to bring home Carter, and Kelly singled through the left side to score Hammond, making it 6-0.

Longwood managed its only real threat in the fifth, when L. Oh reached on a two-base error and M. Tufts singled to put runners at first and second with one out. But Brachbill struck out T. Bruggeman and then got B. Pulliam to ground out, ending the inning.

High Point added two more runs in the fifth. After a walk to SeoJun Oh, Hammond doubled to right field, scoring Oh and another runner to make it 8-0. The Panthers capped the scoring in the sixth when SeoJun Oh hit a two-run homer to right center, plating Kelly and extending the lead to 10-0.

Longwood used five pitchers in the game, including Joe Castrichini, Braydon Gray and Cameron Freeman, who each threw a scoreless inning. But the Lancers managed only two hits total: a single by Bruggeman in the third and a single by Tufts in the fifth. Longwood fell to 27-19.

Hammond finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. SeoJun Oh was 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Landen Johnson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Charlie Jones pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout for High Point.

The game was the first of a three-game Big South series. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday at the same venue.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of High Point 6, Longwood 5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected High Point with a 77.10 percent probability to win.
