Georgia Southern at Mercer

MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — Mercer looks to continue its dominant season when it hosts Georgia Southern on Wednesday night at Claude Smith Field, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. under rainy skies and 66-degree temperatures.

The Bears (32-12) carry a 64.30 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, which projects a 7-0 shutout. Mercer has won seven of its last 10 games, including a 13-8 victory over Wofford on Sunday. In that win, designated hitter Braydon Kersey went 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs. Over his past 10 games, Kersey has collected four multi-hit performances and three home runs, while also logging scoreless relief appearances against Towson on April 18 and 19.

Georgia Southern (13-31) has struggled this season, losing nine of its last 10 contests. The Eagles snapped a six-game skid Tuesday with an 18-4 rout of Charleston Southern, their most lopsided win of the year. Right fielder Bryson Trammell led the way, going 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBIs. Trammell has been inconsistent, however, posting a .222 average over his previous nine games before Tuesday’s outburst, with hits in four of those contests.

Mercer’s pitching staff has been a strength, while Georgia Southern’s offense has been erratic. The Bears have allowed four or fewer runs in 19 of their 44 games. The Eagles have scored five or more runs only 12 times, but their 18-run outburst Tuesday showed potential.

The teams are scheduled to meet again May 6 in Statesboro, Georgia. After Wednesday, Mercer travels to Samford for a three-game series starting Friday, while Georgia Southern hosts Coastal Carolina for a three-game set beginning Friday.

For Georgia Southern, pitcher Will Holder threw five scoreless innings of one-hit ball Tuesday, striking out six without a walk. Left fielder Brady Christman also went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs in that game. For Mercer, center fielder Michael Graziano homered and drove in two runs Sunday, and pitcher Jess Ackerman allowed one earned run over three innings.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday. Rain is expected throughout the game, which could affect playing conditions and pitching strategies.
