Northwestern State at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) – The Arkansas Razorbacks (29-16) host the Northwestern State Demons (25-19) at Baum Stadium on Wednesday evening, looking to continue their recent success against the Southland Conference opponent after a shutout win Tuesday night.

The Razorbacks, who dispatched the Demons by an unearned score Tuesday, enter the midweek contest with a clear statistical advantage. Arkansas has won four of its last six games after splitting a three-game set at Missouri over the weekend, while Northwestern State has lost six of its last seven contests.

The weather forecast calls for 53-degree temperatures and cloudy skies at first pitch.

Parker Coil, a right-handed pitcher for Arkansas, will be a key player to watch after a dominant relief outing Saturday at Missouri, where he threw 3 2/3 hitless innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs. Over his last six appearances, Coil has allowed just one earned run across 11 1/3 innings while striking out 15.

For Northwestern State, outfielder Brooks Leonard is the offensive focal point. He went 1 for 3 with two RBIs in Sunday’s 11-8 loss to Stephen F. Austin, but has struggled overall this month, batting 5 for 30 over his last 10 games with just three RBIs.

The Demons’ bullpen showed promise Sunday; relievers Jacob LeBlanc and Caleb Muffoletto each threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings against the Lumberjacks.

Arkansas’s pitching was stout in Saturday’s loss at Missouri, with Gabe Gaeckle allowing one earned run over 2 2/3 innings and Cooper Dossett recording a scoreless outing. The Razorbacks will lean on a bullpen that has posted a 2.93 ERA over its last 10 games.

Northwestern State is coming off a series loss to Southland rival Stephen F. Austin, while Arkansas is preparing for a three-game home series against Mississippi starting Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Arkansas victory, with an 86.10 percent win probability for the Razorbacks.

Following Wednesday’s game, Northwestern State travels to Louisiana Tech on May 5, then plays a three-game series at McNeese State beginning May 7. Arkansas opens a three-game set against Mississippi on Friday, followed by a home series against Oklahoma starting May 8.
