Cal State Bakersfield at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — Dusty Vela drove in five runs on three hits and Cal State Bakersfield erupted for 17 runs to rout Pacific 17-4 on Tuesday night at Klein Family Field.

The Roadrunners improved to 19-24, while the Tigers dropped to 17-24.

Vela, a third baseman, went 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBIs, continuing a hot stretch. In his previous three games, he had collected five hits in eight at-bats with three RBIs. His performance Tuesday included a two-run double in the second inning, a two-run double in the fifth and an RBI double in the seventh.

Yahir Acevedo, pinch-hitting in the eighth inning, launched a grand slam down the right-field line to cap the scoring. He finished 1 for 1 with four RBIs. Devon Wilkes added three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs. Jacob May had a triple and an RBI.

Cal State Bakersfield used seven pitchers. Starter CJ Brown worked three innings, allowing one earned run on no hits with one strikeout. Jeter Schuerman, Brock Adamson, Levi Grothen and Joe Tootle each threw a scoreless inning. Tootle struck out three in the seventh.

Pacific scored its four runs on eight hits. Rylan Evans homered in the sixth inning, a three-run shot that cut the deficit to 17-4. Brendan O’Sullivan had two hits and an RBI.

The game’s most important stretch came in the top of the second inning. With the Roadrunners leading 1-0 after a first-inning RBI double by Wilkes, they loaded the bases on an error and a hit batter. Vela doubled to right-center, clearing the bases with two runs, then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on May’s triple. That gave Cal State Bakersfield a 4-0 lead and control of the game.

Pacific answered in the third when O’Sullivan doubled home Alex Dolan, cutting the lead to 4-1. But the Roadrunners broke it open in the fifth. Wilkes doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Morisaki. Later in the inning, Vela doubled again, driving in two more runs for an 8-1 advantage.

Cal State Bakersfield added five more in the seventh, highlighted by a double from Wilkes that scored Cloyd, and a single from Pelayo. The Roadrunners sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.

Acevedo’s grand slam in the eighth was the exclamation point. He drove in Miller Tai, B. Thompson and Salazar.

Pacific’s bullpen struggled. Starter Liam Smith was pulled after one inning. Relievers Matt Ludeman, Ethan Shaver, Nathen Nino, Elias Valdez and Maddox Moreno combined to allow 12 runs.

Cal State Bakersfield finished with 12 hits. Pacific had eight.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Pacific 6, Cal State Bakersfield 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Roadrunners a 52.60 percent probability to win.
