Southern at Louisiana-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — The Southern Jaguars (18-20) visit the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (24-18) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at M.L. Tigue Moore Field. The forecast calls for 82-degree temperatures and cloudy skies.

Southern enters on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home, capped by a wild 16-15 victory Sunday. Right fielder Ryan Hunter, a key bat for the Jaguars, went 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs in that game. Over his last 10 contests, Hunter has recorded multiple hits in eight of them, including a pair of hits in each of the three games against Alcorn State earlier this month. For the season, he is hitting .320 with six home runs and 28 RBIs.

The Jaguars’ offense has been explosive, averaging nearly 11 runs per game during their current win streak. First baseman Jaylon Lucky drove in five runs Sunday, and center fielder Jacoby Radcliffe added three RBIs. However, Southern’s pitching has been inconsistent, allowing 15 runs to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the series finale.

Louisiana-Lafayette (24-18) dropped its last contest, a 8-3 loss at Arkansas State on Sunday, but the Ragin’ Cajuns had won three of four prior to that. Left-handed pitcher Hayden Pearson, a reliable reliever, tossed three scoreless innings Sunday, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out two. Over his last five appearances, Pearson has allowed just two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings (2.35 ERA) with four strikeouts.

The Ragin’ Cajuns offense is led by left fielder Mark Collins, who homered and drove in two runs Sunday. Louisiana-Lafayette has shown resilience, winning 11 of its last 15 games overall.

Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-6 victory for Southern.

Southern’s next series is at Mississippi Valley State starting Friday, while Louisiana-Lafayette hosts Nicholls State on Wednesday before a three-game set against Georgia State beginning Friday.
