San Jose State at Air Force
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Interstat) — The Air Force Falcons completed a three-game Mountain West sweep of the San Jose State Spartans with an 11-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Falcon Baseball Field.
Air Force improved to 21-20 overall and 9-10 in Mountain West play. San Jose State fell to 17-23 overall and 7-12 in conference.
The Falcons trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning before erupting for eight runs on seven hits and a San Jose State error. The decisive rally began when Wyatt Hanoian walked and San Jose State brought in reliever Charlie McGrew. After a strikeout, a fielding error by third baseman Christian OsorioAgard put runners on first and second. Hutchins singled to load the bases. Pinch-runner Owen Oster replaced Hutchins.
James Taylor singled to left field to score Hanoian. Landon Boyd followed with a two-run single through the right side. Kayden Bradshaw then crushed a three-run home run to deep left field, his fifth of the season, giving Air Force a 9-5 lead. After a walk, Walker Zapp tripled to left center, driving in another run. Hanoian grounded out to second base in his second at-bat of the inning, scoring Zapp to cap the outburst.
San Jose State struck first in the top of the first inning. Alex Fernandes singled to right center, scoring a run. The Spartans added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Cota, and Fernandes delivered a bases-clearing double to left center, pushing the lead to 5-3.
Air Force chipped away earlier. Bradshaw was hit by a pitch and scored on a groundout in the first. Garret Hutchins doubled in a run in the second. Hanoian homered to deep right field in the third.
Air Force pitcher Patrick Davidson earned the victory with three scoreless innings of relief. He entered in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second and one out. He induced a foul out and a strikeout, then worked a clean eighth and ninth, finishing with one hit allowed and four strikeouts. Davidson also threw a scoreless inning in an April 18 win at Grand Canyon.
Bowen Brantingham started for Air Force and allowed one run on one hit over two innings. Jordan Watkins followed with three and two-thirds innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits. Jack Hentges yielded the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth.
For San Jose State, starter Dylan Smith took a no-hitter into the seventh inning but was charged with four earned runs on zero hits. He struck out six over seven innings but allowed five walks and hit two batters. Kyle Calzadiaz recorded the final two outs of the eighth.
Alex Fernandes went 2 for 5 with three RBIs for the Spartans. Landon Boyd had three hits and two RBIs for the Falcons. Wyatt Hanoian added two hits, including a home run. Kayden Bradshaw finished 1 for 4 with the home run and three RBIs.
The two teams combined for 21 hits, with Air Force collecting 13 and San Jose State eight. Each team committed one error.
The Falcons now have won four of their past five games, while the Spartans have lost four of their past five. Air Force travels to Northern Colorado on Tuesday before a weekend series at New Mexico. San Jose State visits San Francisco on Tuesday then hosts Grand Canyon for three games starting Friday.
