Winthrop at Gardner-Webb
SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — Winthrop and Gardner-Webb will conclude their three-game Big South series Sunday evening at John Henry Moss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 80 degrees.
The Eagles (28-15) enter the finale having split the first two games of the series. Winthrop rebounded from a 3-0 loss Friday with a 9-7 victory Saturday, evening the weekend set. Gardner-Webb (19-24) will look to claim the series on its home field.
Winthrop right-hander Brayden Gilley is slated to take the mound. The Eagles’ starter has been dominant in his last three outings despite taking the loss Friday, when he allowed no hits over 6 2/3 innings but surrendered three earned runs. Gilley struck out six in that start. He previously threw six shutout innings against South Carolina Upstate on April 17 and allowed two earned runs while striking out eight over 6 1/3 innings at Presbyterian on April 10.
Gardner-Webb will counter with reliever Jerek Hobb, who has made frequent appearances out of the bullpen. Hobb worked 3 1/3 innings Saturday, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out two. He has struggled in several outings this month, including a start against High Point on March 29 in which he allowed five earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Winthrop’s offense was keyed Saturday by second baseman Merik Carter, who went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Colby Putnam tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to secure the win.
The series has been tightly contested. Gardner-Webb’s victory Friday was a shutout, while Winthrop’s win Saturday featured a late rally. The Eagles have won four of their last five games overall. Gardner-Webb has dropped six of its last seven.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Winthrop victory, and the ELO system gives the Eagles a 60.1 percent probability of winning.
Winthrop will host North Carolina A&T on Tuesday before beginning a three-game road series at UNC Asheville next weekend. Gardner-Webb hosts Wofford on Tuesday before traveling to South Carolina Upstate for a three-game set.
