Purdue at Southern California

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Southern California looks to complete a three-game sweep of Purdue on Sunday afternoon/evening at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

The Trojans (33-11) have dominated the early portion of this Big Ten series, winning 6-1 on Saturday and 4-3 on Friday. Sunday’s contest is set for a 62-degree afternoon under cloudy skies.

Purdue (27-14) seeks to salvage the finale after dropping the first two games. The Boilermakers have lost five of their last seven overall.

Pitching matchup

Purdue right-hander Gavin Beuter is expected to take the mound. Over his last seven appearances, Beuter has posted a 1.72 ERA across 17 2/3 innings, allowing just eight hits and three earned runs while striking out 11. In Saturday’s loss, he threw four scoreless innings, allowing no hits with two strikeouts.

USC will counter with right-hander Grant Govel, who dominated Purdue on Friday. Govel threw eight innings of two-hit shutout ball, striking out eight. Over his last six outings, Govel has a 4.24 ERA in 27 innings, but his command has been sharp, with 25 strikeouts against seven walks.

Series notes

USC’s offense has been productive in the series. Center fielder Kevin Takeuchi homered and drove in two runs Saturday, while second baseman Abbrie Covarrubias went 3-for-4 with an RBI. The Trojans have outscored Purdue 10-4 in the series.

Purdue’s bullpen has struggled. Relievers Joe Trenerry and Zach Erdman combined to allow five earned runs in four innings Saturday.

Looking ahead

Despite the series results, Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-4 Purdue victory Sunday.

Following this series, Purdue returns home to face Southern Indiana on Wednesday. USC travels to UC Irvine on Tuesday.

The Boilermakers will look to avoid their first three-game losing streak since dropping three straight from March 31 to April 4. USC, meanwhile, can complete its second conference series sweep of the season.
