Rider at Monmouth
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Interstat) — The Rider Broncs and Monmouth Hawks meet Sunday afternoon at Monmouth Baseball Field in the finale of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. under a forecast of 49 degrees and rain.
Rider (22-13) enters on a high after routing Monmouth 14-4 on Friday. PJ Craig starred in that win, tossing 5⅓ hitless innings with six strikeouts. The right-hander has been dominant in his last two starts, allowing two earned runs over 13 innings, but inconsistency lingers after a rough outing April 10 at Fairfield in which he surrendered seven earned runs in five innings. Monmouth (23-17) counters with Caden Carlin, who worked one scoreless inning Friday. The reliever has struggled recently, including an April 21 outing at Long Island in which he allowed four earned runs without recording an out.
The Hawks have lost four of their last six, including Friday’s blowout. The status of Saturday’s game was not immediately available. Monmouth’s offense, led by center fielder Colin Richter (1 for 4, RBI on Friday), will need to solve Craig early. The Broncs’ lineup features power from Erich Hartmann, who homered twice and drove in four runs Friday, and first baseman Charley Magoulick, who went 4 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Rider victory, giving the Broncs a 53.3 percent win probability via its ELO system.
Sunday’s game marks the final contest before both teams begin conference series Friday. Rider travels to Niagara for a three-game set, while Monmouth hosts Northeastern.
