Texas A&M at Florida

GAINESVILLE (Interstat) — A dominant pitching performance by Weston Moss and a timely home run from Bear Harrison powered Texas A&M to a 5-1 Southeastern Conference victory over Florida on Sunday afternoon at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium.

The Aggies improved to 33-8 overall and 14-7 in the SEC after splitting the first two games of the series. The Gators fell to 29-16 and 11-10. Texas A&M took an early lead in the top of the third inning and never trailed, aided by three Florida double plays and a stifling bullpen.

Moss started and worked four innings, allowing one earned run on no hits while striking out two. The only run charged to Moss came in the bottom of the fourth when Cade Kurland doubled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Caden McDonald. That cut the Aggies’ lead to 3-1, but Texas A&M answered immediately.

Gavin Lyons relieved Moss and tossed three scoreless innings, giving up no hits with two strikeouts. Clayton Freshcorn closed the game with two perfect innings, recording one strikeout. The trio combined to allow only eight hits over nine innings while striking out five.

Texas A&M’s offense, which totaled 11 hits, broke through in the third. Kaeden Kellner led off with a single that was advanced to second on a throwing error. Wyatt Grahovac singled him home and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jason Hacopian.

The Aggies added a run in the fourth when Jorian Wilson singled, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Wilson then homered to center field in the sixth inning, increasing the lead to 4-1. Harrison capped the scoring in the ninth with a solo home run to center field.

Harrison finished 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Wilson went 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. Grahovac had two hits and an RBI.

Florida starter Russell Sandefer took the loss after allowing three earned runs on eight hits over five innings with three strikeouts. Joshua Whritenour worked 3 2/3 innings of relief, surrendering one run on one hit. Cooper Walls faced two batters in the sixth and gave up a home run to Wilson.

The Gators outhit Texas A&M 8-11 but grounded into three double plays, including two by the middle of the order. Kurland had a double and scored the only Florida run. McDonald drove him in.

The game began with a 32-minute delay due to unplayable field conditions. First pitch was at 1:32 p.m. under partly cloudy skies with a wind blowing out to right field at 7 mph.

Texas A&M’s victory snapped a two-game losing streak in the series after dropping Friday’s opener 9-2 and winning Saturday’s game 8-4.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Texas A&M 8, Florida 5, and the ELO system gave Texas A&M a 53.60 percent probability to win.
