Loyola Marymount at Gonzaga

SPOKANE (Interstat) — Gonzaga defeated Loyola Marymount 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Washington Trust Field and Patterson Baseball Complex, rallying from a three-run deficit behind a four-run fifth inning and strong pitching from Justin Feld and Landon Hood.

The Bulldogs improved to 25-14, while the Lions dropped to 12-31.

Loyola Marymount struck first in the second inning. After a single by Mhoon and a strikeout, Matt Moreno singled to right field, scoring Mhoon from first base on a play that included an error by shortstop Ricky Sanchez. Jake Lyall followed with an RBI single, also unearned, to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Moreno added another run in the fourth inning with a solo home run to deep left field, making it 3-0.

Gonzaga’s offense awakened in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Bryce Wrubleski singled up the middle and Hayden Eisenstat singled to short. After a strikeout, a wild pitch advanced both runners. Sanchez then singled to shallow left field, driving in Wrubleski and moving Eisenstat to third. Mikey Bell followed with a three-run home run to left center, scoring Eisenstat and Sanchez and giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.

That was all the support Feld needed. The right-hander pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out 12. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced before exiting with two outs in the seventh. Hood came on and struck out the final batter of the seventh, then struck out the side in the eighth. He finished with six strikeouts over 2 1/3 hitless innings, earning the save.

Jonah Johnson took the loss for Loyola Marymount, pitching seven innings and allowing four earned runs with three strikeouts. Jake Geis pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Bell finished 1-for-4 with the homer and three RBIs. Sanchez was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Ryder Young went 2-for-4 with a single in the fourth and another in the eighth. Bo Shinkle had a bunt single in the third for Gonzaga. For Loyola Marymount, Lyall went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Moreno was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, including the home run. The Lions managed just two hits in the game, both coming in the second inning.

The game featured strong defensive plays. Gonzaga turned a double play in the first inning when Young grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Loyola Marymount’s defense also flashed, with shortstop-to-first double plays in the fourth and fifth innings. The Lions’ pitching staff held the Bulldogs to eight hits but could not overcome the five-run outburst.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a 7-3 Gonzaga victory, and its ELO system gave the Bulldogs a 68.40 percent probability to win.
