LSU at Mississippi State
STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — Mississippi State rallied from a four-run deficit and walked off in the 11th inning Friday, defeating LSU 10-8 at Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium.
The Bulldogs, now 32-10 overall and winners of four straight, needed extra innings to overcome an LSU team that jumped out to an early lead. The Tigers, 24-19, had won their previous game against New Orleans but had lost three straight Southeastern Conference series entering the weekend.
LSU struck for four runs in the top of the first inning, all unearned after a fielding error by the Mississippi State third baseman allowed leadoff hitter Stanfield to reach. Curiel doubled, and after a replay review upheld a call that Serna was not hit by a pitch, Serna singled in a run. Milam added an RBI single, and Braun drove in another with a groundout. The Tigers led 4-0 after half an inning, though only one run was earned.
Mississippi State answered immediately in the bottom of the first. After a walk to Reese, Blake Bevis crushed a two-run homer to left-center, cutting the lead to 4-2. The Bulldogs had a chance for more but stranded a runner.
LSU extended its lead in the third when Omar Serna homered to left, making it 5-2. Mississippi State responded in the bottom half with a solo home run by Reese, pulling within 5-3.
The Tigers broke the game open in the fourth, scoring three more runs — all unearned — on a two-run single by Milam and a throwing error by the Mississippi State center fielder. LSU led 8-3.
But the Bulldogs chipped away. In the bottom of the fourth, Chance doubled, Woodson walked, and Frei singled to drive in a run, making it 8-4. A solo homer by Noah Sullivan in the fifth cut it to 8-5.
Mississippi State tied the game in the sixth. Woodson reached on an error, and after a wild pitch, Sullivan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. Bevis followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring another run, and the Bulldogs pulled within 8-7. The inning ended with the bases loaded as reliever Santiago Garcia entered and induced a fielder’s choice.
The score remained 8-7 until the bottom of the ninth. Mississippi State’s Sanders, pinch-running for Valincius, advanced on a fielder’s choice that was initially ruled a double play but overturned on replay. Woodson singled through the left side, scoring Sanders to tie the game at 8-8.
Neither team scored in the 10th. In the top of the 11th, LSU went down in order against reliever Dane Burns, who struck out two.
The bottom of the 11th began with a Stallman strikeout, but Chance singled through the right side. After a second strikeout, Kevin Milewski stepped to the plate and launched a two-run homer to left field, giving Mississippi State a 10-8 walk-off victory.
Bevis finished 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Sullivan was 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBIs. Milewski went 1 for 5 with the game-winning blast and two RBIs. For LSU, Serna went 3 for 5 with a homer and two RBIs, and Milam drove in three runs.
Garcia pitched three innings of relief for LSU, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out three. Mississippi State reliever Ben Davis threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Maddox Webb got the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Burns earned a hold with a perfect 11th.
The game, which started in the afternoon and stretched into the evening, was the first of a three-game SEC series. LSU and Mississippi State meet again Saturday, with the Bulldogs looking to build on their series-opening win.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Mississippi State 6, LSU 3, while the ELO system gave Mississippi State a 50.10 percent probability to win.
