COLUMBIA, Mo. (Interstat) — A two-run home run by Zack Stewart in the eighth inning lifted Arkansas to a 5-4 win over Missouri on Thursday afternoon at Taylor Stadium.
The Razorbacks improved to 28-15 overall, while the Tigers fell to 20-22.
Arkansas starter Hunter Dietz worked seven innings, striking out eight while allowing three earned runs on zero hits. Dietz, who entered the game with a 6-3 win over Georgia on April 16, did not permit a hit but issued walks and hit a batter, leading to the three runs. The right-hander left with the game tied.
Missouri seized an early lead. Jase Woita opened the bottom of the first with a solo home run, his 10th of the season. After Kam Durnin was hit by a pitch, Blaize Ward followed with a two-run homer, his third, to stake the Tigers to a 3-0 advantage.
The Razorbacks answered in the fifth when TJ Pompey led off with a solo home run to right-center, his 10th, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
Arkansas tied the game in the seventh. Kuhio Aloy walked and Reese Robinett doubled, putting runners at second and third. After a strikeout, Carter Rutenbar singled up the middle, scoring both Aloy and Robinett to make it 3-3.
The pivotal moment came in the eighth. With one out, Nolan Souza walked and stole second. Stewart then drove a pitch to right-center for a two-run homer, his seventh, giving Arkansas its first lead at 5-3.
Missouri mounted a final threat in the ninth. Mateo Serna walked and advanced to second on a groundout, then moved to third on a flyout. Donovan Jordan, pinch-hitting for Keegan Knutson, singled up the middle to score Jamal George, who was running for Serna, cutting the lead to 5-4. Tyler Macon, pinch-hitting for Isaiah Frost, struck out looking to end the game.
Arkansas relievers Gabe Gaeckle and Ethan McElvain combined for two innings of work. Gaeckle struck out three in a scoreless eighth, and McElvain allowed one run on one hit while striking out one in the ninth to earn the save.
Missouri starter Josh McDevitt took a no-decision after striking out 11 over 6⅓ innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Trey Lawrence gave up two runs in 1⅔ innings and was credited with the loss. Ian Lohse pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Razorbacks had six hits, including three for extra bases. Pompey, Robinett and Rutenbar each drove in two runs. Stewart also drove in two with his homer. Missouri managed eight hits, led by Ward’s two hits, including the homer, and Woita’s two-hit, one-homer performance. The Tigers grounded into two double plays.
The series continues Friday at Taylor Stadium.
