Lamar at South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — A midweek non-conference clash featuring two of the region’s hottest teams is set for Wednesday evening at Eddie Stanky Field as the South Alabama Jaguars host the Lamar Cardinals.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT under cloudy skies with temperatures near 77 degrees.
The Jaguars (24-16) enter with momentum, having won two of three against Marshall last weekend, including a 4-1 victory Sunday. South Alabama’s bullpen has been sharp, with Zach Stevens and Max Miller combining for 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the series finale.
Lamar (22-18) is also riding high after sweeping a three-game set from Northwestern State, capped by a dramatic 4-3, 15-inning win on Sunday. The Cardinals’ pitching staff was dominant in the series, allowing just four total runs.
A key matchup will feature two standout arms. Lamar is expected to rely on Jarret Williams, who delivered five strong innings with eight strikeouts in Sunday’s extended victory. The right-hander has shown swing-and-miss stuff but has been inconsistent, surrendering six earned runs over his last two appearances before Sunday.
South Alabama will counter with Daniel Gonzalez. The right-hander was excellent in his last start, holding Marshall to one run over 5 2/3 innings on April 19. He boasts a dominant nine-strikeout performance against Old Dominion from late March.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be a tight one, with a predicted final score of South Alabama 6, Lamar 5.
Following Wednesday’s game, both teams dive back into conference play. South Alabama begins a Sun Belt series at home against Southern Mississippi on Friday. Lamar opens a Southland Conference series at New Orleans on Friday.
