Liberty at Virginia
LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. (Interstat) — Two of the state’s top teams will meet Wednesday when the Liberty Flames visit the Virginia Cavaliers in a nonconference midweek clash at Davenport Field.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m. under clear skies with temperatures near 57 degrees.
Both teams enter with identical 28-win records and momentum. Liberty (28-11) is coming off a series win at Dallas Baptist, capped by a 9-8 victory Sunday. Virginia (28-13) took two of three from Clemson last weekend, including a 5-4 win Saturday.
The matchup features a recent high-scoring precedent. Just over a month ago, on March 18, Virginia outlasted Liberty 14-12 in Lynchburg.
A key player to watch for the Flames is reliever Tyler August. He has been dominant lately, tossing three hitless innings with six strikeouts in Sunday’s win. Over his last two appearances, he has pitched five innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out 10.
Virginia will counter with a bullpen arm of its own in John Paone. The right-hander was crucial in Saturday’s win over Clemson, throwing 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits and striking out seven to earn the victory.
Liberty’s offense is riding high after scoring 35 runs in its last three games. Shortstop Tanner Marsh went 4 for 5 with an RBI in the series finale at Dallas Baptist. Virginia’s lineup is powered by Harrison Didawick, who hit two home runs in the Saturday win over Clemson.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Liberty is projected to win 8-4.
Following this game, both teams jump back into conference play. Liberty hosts Delaware for a three-game series starting Friday. Virginia travels to Pittsburgh for a weekend Atlantic Coast Conference series beginning Friday.
