Mountaineers Ride Early Power, Pitching to Defeat Nittany Lions

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (Interstat) — Jack Porter’s two-run homer in the second inning provided the decisive swing as West Virginia topped Penn State 3-1 on Wednesday.

Paul Schoenfeld led off the game with a solo home run for the Nittany Lions, but Porter answered an inning later with his blast to deep left field. The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the third on Weston Smith’s RBI infield single.

West Virginia’s pitching staff, led by starter Harrison Lollin, limited Penn State to six hits after the initial homer. The Nittany Lions out-hit the Mountaineers 6-5 but stranded multiple runners.

The victory improved West Virginia’s record to 25-8, while Penn State fell to 10-24. The teams will meet again in State College on April 29.
