Anderson Dominates as Dirtbags Upset Trojans
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Interstat) — Caleb Anderson delivered a masterful start Tuesday, striking out nine over six one-hit innings to lead Long Beach State to a 5-3 upset of eighth-ranked Southern California at Blair Field.
The Dirtbags’ starter rebounded emphatically from two rough outings, silencing a Trojans lineup that had averaged over seven runs per game. His effort made a first-inning, two-run double from Kaiden Smaka stand up. Jake Evans added three hits and an RBI for Long Beach State.
USC’s Augie Lopez hit a two-run homer in the eighth, but Tyler Gebb and Jaxon Baker closed it out. Four Trojans relievers combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings, but the early deficit proved too large. The Dirtbags improved to 12-23, while the Trojans fell to 30-8.
