Omaha at Kansas State
MANHATTAN, Kan. (Interstat) — The Kansas State Wildcats, riding a strong season, will look to rebound from a tough extra-inning loss when they host the struggling Omaha Mavericks in nonconference baseball action Tuesday at Tointon Family Stadium.
First pitch is set for a cloudy 88-degree afternoon.
The Wildcats (22-12) enter having won seven of their last 10, but are coming off a 13-inning, 12-10 defeat to Oklahoma State on Sunday. Kansas State’s bullpen was taxed in that series, making the availability of key arms a focal point.
Omaha (11-17) snapped a three-game skid with a dramatic 8-7, 12-inning win over Oral Roberts on Sunday. The Mavericks have found wins scarce, however, dropping 12 of their last 16 contests.
A player to watch for Omaha is two-way standout Sam Beck. He was instrumental in Sunday’s victory, pitching six innings of three-run ball and striking out nine. At the plate this season, Beck is hitting .250. On the mound, his last two starts have been quality outings, allowing four earned runs over 11 innings with 14 strikeouts.
Kansas State will counter with right-hander Tazwell Butler, who turned in a stellar relief appearance Sunday. Butler fired six innings against Oklahoma State, allowing three runs on just three hits while striking out 11. He provides a flexible option for the Wildcats, who may need length after the weekend.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Kansas State 5, Omaha 4.
Following this midweek contest, Kansas State travels to Arizona for a three-game series starting Friday. Omaha begins Summit League play with a three-game set at North Dakota State on Friday.
