UNC Asheville at Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Tennessee Volunteers, riding high after a road series win at Mississippi State, return to Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Tuesday to host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a nonconference matchup.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 76 degrees.
The Volunteers (24-12) swept a doubleheader Sunday to clinch the series against the Bulldogs, capped by a 7-2 victory in which starter Evan Blanco shined. The left-hander allowed two earned runs on zero hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six. Blanco (3-2, 4.12 ERA) is expected to get the start again Tuesday. His recent outings have been a mix of dominance, like his 7 2/3-inning, one-run effort against Missouri on March 22, and struggles, including a six-run outing at Vanderbilt on March 29.
He will face a UNC Asheville (16-20) team coming off a 7-5 win at Longwood on Sunday. The Bulldogs’ victory was powered by a complete-game effort from ace Cooper Smith, who allowed three earned runs on zero hits with five strikeouts over nine innings. Smith, who also earned a win over Gardner-Webb on April 4, is likely to be a key arm for the Bulldogs in Knoxville.
Tennessee won the previous meeting this season, 10-3, on Feb. 17 in Knoxville. The Volunteers’ offense, averaging over seven runs per game, will test a UNC Asheville pitching staff that has a team ERA of 6.84.
The Bulldogs have lost eight of their last 12 games. Following Tuesday’s contest, Tennessee opens a crucial Southeastern Conference series at home against Mississippi on Friday, while UNC Asheville begins a Big South Conference series against Wofford.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Tennessee 6, UNC Asheville 3.
