Portland at Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots, riding a potent offense, visit the Gonzaga Bulldogs to open a three-game West Coast Conference series Friday at Washington Trust Field and Patterson Baseball Complex.
Portland (20-10) enters with the better overall record, having won seven of its last 10, including a 13-9 slugfest over Oregon on Wednesday. The Pilots’ bats were on full display in that victory, led by Jonas Salk’s grand slam. Salk, a key player to watch, has two home runs and seven RBIs in his last five games, though his production has been inconsistent.
Gonzaga (17-14) looks to build momentum after a midweek road win at Washington, 8-5, on Tuesday. Bulldogs reliever Mickey McClaskey was dominant in that victory, throwing 4 1/3 hitless innings while allowing one earned run. Over his last six appearances, McClaskey has surrendered just five hits in 16 innings, establishing himself as a reliable arm out of the bullpen.
The series pits Portland’s offensive surge against a Gonzaga team seeking consistency. The Pilots have scored eight or more runs in four of their last six wins. For Gonzaga, shortstop Ricky Sanchez is coming off a perfect 4-for-4, two-RBI performance against Washington.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Friday’s contest is projected to be a high-scoring affair, with Gonzaga edging Portland 7-6.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday in Spokane before both teams embark on non-conference action next week. Portland travels to Washington State on Monday, while Gonzaga prepares for a road series at Saint Mary’s next weekend.
