Oregon State at Washington State
PULLMAN, Wash. (Interstat) — The Oregon State Beavers delivered a dominant and historic performance Monday night, routing the Washington State Cougars 18-0 in a seven-inning mercy-rule victory at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The game was decided in a nightmarish third inning for the home team, where Oregon State sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs to turn a scoreless contest into a blowout. The Beavers, ranked among the nation’s elite, improved to 25-6 overall, while Washington State fell to 14-17.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in that decisive top of the third. After Bryson Glassco led off with a single and was sacrificed to second, Easton Talt broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double. The floodgates opened from there. A hit-by-pitch and an RBI single by Hubbard made it 2-0, followed by an RBI single from Josh Proctor. After a walk loaded the bases, Washington State reliever Rodriguez entered but could not stem the tide. Inge greeted him with a two-run single, and after another hit-by-pitch reloaded the bases, Glassco stepped in again and launched a grand slam down the right-field line, capping the 11-run outburst and putting the game out of reach at 11-0.
That offensive explosion was more than enough for Oregon State starter Eric Segura, who was brilliant over four hitless innings. Segura struck out six and walked two, earning the win and lowering his ERA. He set the tone for a combined one-hitter, as relievers AJ Hutcheson and Tanner Douglas were equally overpowering. Hutcheson struck out five over two perfect innings, and Douglas struck out two in a perfect seventh to seal the run-rule victory.
Washington State’s lone hit was a second-inning single by Obenour off Segura. The Cougars used seven pitchers in the loss, with starter Blatter taking the defeat after being charged with six earned runs in two-plus innings.
Oregon State’s offense was relentless, tallying 11 hits and capitalizing on 10 walks and five hit batters by Washington State pitching. Josh Proctor led the charge, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Bryson Glassco drove in four runs on his two hits, the grand slam being the crushing blow. The Beavers scored in every inning from the third onward, adding two in the fourth, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh to reach the final margin.
The loss was a stark departure from the pregame projection by Interstat, which had simulated a tight 8-6 Oregon State victory. The Beavers’ 84.5% win probability proved conservative as they authored one of their most complete performances of the season.
Oregon State will look to carry this momentum into the second game of the series Tuesday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. Washington State will aim for a swift rebound in the rematch.
