Minnesota at Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Iowa Hawkeyes will meet Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field to decide their Big Ten series after splitting the first two games.
First pitch is scheduled for 4:44 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 44 degrees.
The series is tied after Iowa (14-12) edged Minnesota (18-12) 3-2 on Saturday, following the Golden Gophers’ 9-4 victory on Friday.
A pitcher’s duel is anticipated in the rubber match. Minnesota will look to right-hander Isaac Morton, who delivered 5 1/3 hitless innings of relief in Saturday’s loss, allowing one earned run. Over his last four appearances, Morton has a 2.08 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 23 innings, including a seven-inning, one-hit shutout of Illinois on March 14.
Iowa is expected to counter with right-hander Maddux Frese, who earned the win Saturday after holding Minnesota to two earned runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. In his last five outings, Frese is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA.
The Hawkeyes’ Carter Geffre provided the decisive blow Saturday with a two-run home run.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Iowa is projected to win a close one, 4-3.
After Sunday, Iowa travels to face Milwaukee on Tuesday before a weekend series at Southern California. Minnesota hosts South Dakota State on Wednesday before a weekend series against Washington.
