UC Riverside at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Cal State Fullerton Titans will look to build on a dominant series-opening win when they host the UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West Conference matchup Saturday evening at Goodwin Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 66 degrees.

The Titans (12-14, 1-0 Big West) cruised to a 9-1 victory in Thursday’s conference opener behind a stellar start from right-hander Mikiah Negrete. He is expected to take the mound again Saturday after throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out six against the Highlanders just two days ago.

UC Riverside (8-20, 0-1) will seek to end a four-game skid and find an answer for Negrete. A player to watch for the Highlanders is reliever Jack Becker, who provided 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in Thursday’s loss. Over his last 10 appearances, Becker has a 2.70 ERA in 13 1/3 innings, allowing just eight hits while striking out 11.

The Titans’ offense was powered in the opener by right fielder Paul Contreras and third baseman Ty Thomas, who each homered and drove in three runs. Cal State Fullerton has won four of its last six games.

The Highlanders have struggled to a 2-8 record over their last 10 games, with team pitching being a primary concern, having allowed 10 or more runs in six of those contests.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Cal State Fullerton 4, UC Riverside 3.

Following Saturday’s game, the series concludes Sunday afternoon. The Titans host UCLA on Tuesday before a Big West series at Long Beach State next weekend. The Highlanders travel to San Diego State on Tuesday before hosting Cal State Northridge in a conference series starting Friday.
