Nicholls State at Tulane
NEW ORLEANS (Interstat) — Two Louisiana programs seeking momentum will meet Tuesday when the Tulane Green Wave host the Nicholls State Colonels in a midweek nonconference baseball game at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature near 72 degrees.
Both teams enter with nearly identical records. Tulane (14-15) looks to snap a three-game skid after being swept at UAB over the weekend. Nicholls State (13-15) dropped two of three at home to Northwestern State in its most recent series.
The Colonels won the season’s first meeting, 6-5, in Thibodaux on March 3. In that game, Tulane reliever Blaise Wilcenski took the loss, allowing an unearned run over 2 1/3 innings.
Wilcenski is a key player to watch for the Green Wave. The reliever has been effective lately, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in Sunday’s loss at UAB. Over his last four appearances, he has not allowed an earned run.
For Nicholls State, the spotlight will be on right-hander Haden Luke. The Colonels’ standout is coming off a dominant performance last Tuesday against Northwestern State, where he struck out 14 batters and allowed just one earned run over six innings in a no-decision. In his last four outings, Luke has twice thrown six scoreless frames, including a no-hit effort at Incarnate Word on March 22.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Tulane is projected to win 5-3.
Following this contest, both teams dive back into conference play. Tulane travels to face Wichita State for a three-game American Athletic Conference series starting Thursday. Nicholls State opens a Southland Conference series at Houston Christian on Thursday.
