Jacksonville at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Jacksonville Dolphins capitalized on a critical overturned call and a late passed ball to upset the Florida Gators 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium, defying heavy statistical odds.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 7-3 Florida victory, and its ELO system gave the Gators an 84.10 percent probability to win. Instead, Jacksonville (13-16) used a four-run eighth inning to snap a three-game skid and hand Florida (23-7) just its seventh loss.

The game was a pitchers’ duel for seven innings, dominated by strong relief work. Florida’s Caden McDonald struck out five over 2 2/3 innings, while Jacksonville’s bullpen trio of Kyle Powers, Kyle Hopper and Dominic Pieto combined for five hitless innings. The decisive action came in the eighth.

With the game tied 3-3, Jacksonville’s rally was nearly snuffed out before it began. With two outs and the bases loaded, a 1-2 pitch from Florida reliever Cooper Walls appeared to hit Jacksonville’s Vergara, which would have forced in a run. The call was overturned upon review, ruling it a dead ball and keeping the bases loaded with a full count.

On the next pitch, Vergara singled sharply to right field, driving in two runs to give Jacksonville a 5-3 lead. The Dolphins added a crucial insurance run moments later when a passed ball allowed Walter to score from third.

That run proved vital, as Jacksonville’s bullpen sealed the win. Hopper pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts, and Pieto worked a scoreless ninth for the save, stranding the potential tying run at second base.

Florida had clawed back from an early deficit. Trailing 3-0, the Gators scored twice in the third on a sacrifice fly by Lawson and an RBI groundout by Surowiec. Cole Stanford cut the lead to 3-2 with a solo home run to left field in the fourth.

Jacksonville managed only six hits but drew eight walks and were hit by five pitches. Florida was held to five hits, with Stanford’s 2-for-4, home run performance leading the offense.

The Dolphins’ victory marked a significant turnaround after being swept by North Florida over the weekend. Florida, coming off a series win at Arkansas, opens Southeastern Conference play at home against Mississippi on Thursday. Jacksonville hosts Stetson on Thursday to begin a three-game set.
