Saint Mary`s at Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Saint Mary’s Gaels and Portland Pilots will decide their weekend series in a Sunday evening matchup at Joe Etzel Field, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. under cloudy skies and a temperature near 59 degrees.
The series is tied after a split of the first two games. Portland (16-8) evened it with an 8-5 victory Saturday, responding after Saint Mary’s (13-12) took the opener 3-0 behind a dominant pitching performance.
That Friday shutout was authored by Saint Mary’s right-hander John Damozonio, who will take the mound again Sunday. Damozonio was spectacular, tossing six no-hit innings with nine strikeouts against the Pilots. Over his last four starts spanning 24 innings, he has allowed just five total hits and two earned runs, striking out 24.
Portland will counter with righty Trey Newmann, who was the hard-luck loser in Friday’s contest. Newmann allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in that outing. His season has been inconsistent, mixing strong appearances, like a four-inning, seven-strikeout relief effort at Loyola Marymount on March 20, with more difficult outings.
The Pilots, holding the better overall record, will look to secure a series win at home before a challenging road stretch. Saint Mary’s aims to build momentum as it seeks to climb above .500 in conference play.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projection favors the Pilots with a predicted final score of 7-4.
Following the series finale, Portland will prepare for a road game at Oregon on Tuesday. Saint Mary’s travels to face California on Tuesday.
