Loyola Marymount at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Santa Clara Broncos and Loyola Marymount Lions will continue their West Coast Conference series Saturday at Stephen Schott Stadium, with both teams seeking momentum in a season that has offered little consistency.

First pitch is scheduled for the evening. The forecast calls for cloudy skies and a temperature near 66 degrees.

The Broncos (9-14) host the Lions (8-20) after the series opener Friday. Santa Clara looks to rebound from a difficult 18-6 non-conference loss to San Jose State on Tuesday. In that game, catcher Johnny Luetzow provided a bright spot, hitting a home run and driving in two runs.

Loyola Marymount arrives with some confidence after an 8-7 midweek win over Cal Poly on Wednesday. Reliever Zachary DenDekker was pivotal in that victory, throwing three innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six. DenDekker has been a key arm for LMU, showing swing-and-miss stuff with 17 strikeouts over his last 12 1/3 innings, though his results have varied.

Santa Clara’s recent schedule has been challenging, with a series at San Francisco and a visit from a powerful San Jose State offense. The Broncos took two of three from Utah Tech earlier this month but have struggled to find a sustained offensive rhythm.

The Lions have faced similar difficulties, with a series loss to Portland and a tough trip to Abilene Christian before the win over Cal Poly. Their pitching staff will be tested by a Santa Clara lineup that includes Luetzow, who homered in his last appearance.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be a tight one, with a predicted final score of Santa Clara 5, Loyola Marymount 4.

The series will conclude Sunday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium.
