Panthers Edge Mountaineers in Pitchers’ Duel
BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — Mateo Wells and five relievers combined on a three-hitter as High Point held off Appalachian State 3-2 on Tuesday night at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
The Panthers scored all their runs in the second inning. After a Ruiz groundout brought in a run, Kelly and Ponce followed with RBI singles. The Mountaineers got a run back in the first on a Luft sacrifice fly and another in the eighth on an Evans RBI single, but the rally fell short.
Wells, the top star for High Point, struck out six over three perfect innings of relief. Panthers pitchers retired 18 consecutive batters from the second through seventh innings. High Point improved to 15-9, while Appalachian State moved to 11-11.
