Oregon State at Southern California
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a stunning Tuesday afternoon upset that defied both records and projections, the Oregon State Beavers delivered a powerful statement, routing the No. 1-ranked Southern California Trojans 12-4 in a Big Ten Conference matchup at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
The Beavers, improving to 18-5, dismantled a Trojans squad that entered the game with a nation-leading 24-1 record. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a tight 8-7 Oregon State victory, but the Beavers’ offense erupted early and sealed the win late, amassing 11 hits to Southern California’s five.
The most important sequence of the game came immediately, setting a dominant tone. Oregon State’s Easton Talt worked a leadoff walk in the first inning, advanced on a passed ball, and then watched as designated hitter Bryce Hubbard launched a two-run homer to right field off starter Mason Pike, who recorded just one out before being relieved. That early blow gave the Beavers a lead they would never relinquish and silenced the home crowd.
Oregon State continued to apply pressure, adding a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Talt and another on a wild pitch. They broke the game open in the third, scoring four times. Josh Proctor doubled and scored on a single by Singer. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Talt delivered a two-run single to right-center, pushing the lead to 8-0.
Southern California showed a brief sign of life in the fourth inning, cutting into the deficit. After an RBI double by Lopez Ad., first baseman Dean Carpentier connected for a three-run homer off reliever Noah Scott, bringing the Trojans within 8-4 and marking the team’s only significant offensive highlight.
From there, the Oregon State bullpen slammed the door. Relievers Isaac Yeager and Wyatt Queen were particularly dominant, each tossing two hitless innings. Yeager struck out two after entering in the sixth, and Queen struck out three over the eighth and ninth, extinguishing any hope of a Trojan rally.
The Beavers put an emphatic exclamation point on the victory in the ninth inning. With two on and two out, third baseman Paul Vazquez crushed a three-run homer to center field off reliever Harbour A., capping the scoring at 12-4.
Hubbard, named the top star for Oregon State, finished 2 for 5 with the crucial first-inning homer and two RBIs, continuing a strong stretch at the plate. Vazquez drove in three runs, while Talt collected two hits and three RBIs. For Southern California, Carpentier’s homer accounted for all three of his RBIs.
Ben Cushnie provided two innings of scoreless relief for the Trojans, but the damage was done early against a parade of Southern California pitchers. The loss was just the second of the season for the Trojans, who will look to regroup as they travel to Maryland for a weekend series starting Friday.
Oregon State, riding a wave of momentum, will host Mercer for a three-game series beginning Friday. The decisive victory over the nation’s top-ranked team serves as a potent reminder of the Beavers’ capabilities as conference play deepens.
