Toledo at Butler
TOLEDO, Ohio (Interstat) — The Toledo Rockets look to get back over .500 when they visit the struggling Butler Bulldogs in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Park in Indianapolis.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 45 degrees.
Toledo (10-11) enters after a tough 6-5 loss in 11 innings at Central Michigan on Sunday, despite a dominant starting pitching performance. The Rockets had won the series opener 10-1 before dropping the final two games of the set.
Butler (3-18) seeks to halt a five-game skid after being swept at Ohio State over the weekend, culminating in a 14-4 loss Sunday. The Bulldogs’ last win was a 14-10 victory at Ball State on March 18.
A key matchup will feature Toledo right-hander Hayden Frey against Butler’s power-hitting first baseman Matthew Rhoades. Frey has been excellent in his last two starts, including a seven-inning, nine-strikeout outing against Central Michigan where he did not allow a hit but was charged with three earned runs. Over his last four appearances, he has a 2.45 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.
Rhoades provides the primary offensive threat for Butler. He homered and drove in two runs in Sunday’s loss to Ohio State and is coming off a 4-for-5, two-homer, four-RBI performance in the win over Ball State. In his last 10 games, he has six home runs and 13 RBIs.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Toledo is projected to win 7-1.
The Rockets’ offense is led by third baseman Troy Sudbrook, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Sunday’s extra-inning loss.
Following Tuesday’s game, Toledo travels to face Michigan on Wednesday before opening Mid-American Conference play at Akron next weekend. Butler begins a three-game series at Milwaukee on Friday.
