UC Irvine at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Two struggling California programs seeking momentum meet Tuesday when UC Irvine visits San Diego State for a nonconference baseball matchup at USD Sports Center.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT under cloudy skies with temperatures around 66 degrees.

The Aztecs (12-13) and Anteaters (9-14) both look to rebound from weekend series losses. San Diego State dropped two of three at Connecticut, including a 7-5 defeat Sunday. UC Irvine was swept at home by Oregon State, culminating in a 9-5 loss Sunday.

A key pitching matchup features two right-handers trying to find consistency. UC Irvine will watch Finnegan Wall, who started Sunday but was tagged for four earned runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings against Oregon State. In his last five outings, Wall is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA, though he threw five scoreless innings against Grand Canyon on Feb. 24.

San Diego State counters with Alec Belardes, who took the loss Sunday at Connecticut despite not allowing a hit. Command issues led to five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, as he walked six. Belardes has shown swing-and-miss ability, striking out nine in six innings at Washington on March 2, but has an 8.44 ERA over his last five appearances.

The Anteaters won the most recent meeting between the teams, 5-2 on Feb. 18 in Irvine. Tommy Farmer IV, who homered Sunday, provides power for UC Irvine. San Diego State’s Jake Jackson also homered in his last game.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 3-1 San Diego State victory.

Both teams face challenging weekend series ahead. The Aztecs travel to Grand Canyon for three games starting Friday, while the Anteaters open Big West play at Long Beach State.
