Jelkin’s Gem Leads Kentucky Past Mississippi in SEC Opener
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — Jaxon Jelkin pitched seven no-hit innings as the Kentucky Wildcats defeated the Mississippi Rebels 3-1 on Friday evening at Swayze Field to open their Southeastern Conference series.
Jelkin (3-0) allowed one earned run and struck out six, dominating a Rebels lineup that managed just four hits total. The Wildcats scored all their runs in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a Mississippi fielding error. Hudson Brown and Owen Jenkins drove in runs during the frame.
Mississippi’s Austin Fawley broke up the combined no-hit bid and shutout with a solo home run in the sixth. Three Rebels relievers combined for 8 2/3 innings of scoreless relief after starter JP Robertson exited early. Kentucky improved to 19-3, while Mississippi fell to 18-6. The teams continue the series Saturday.
