Incarnate Word at Abilene Christian
ABILENE, Texas (Interstat) — A midweek rematch with regional bragging rights on the line is set for Wednesday as the Incarnate Word Cardinals visit the Abilene Christian Wildcats at Kimbrell Arena.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies and 70-degree temperatures.
The Cardinals (10-9) will look to replicate their dominant performance from just a week ago, when they routed the Wildcats 13-1 in San Antonio on March 11. Incarnate Word arrives after dropping a road series finale at New Orleans 11-7 on Sunday, despite a two-homer, four-RBI day from left fielder Jake Weaver.
Weaver has been a central figure in the Cardinals’ offense, driving in four runs in last week’s win over ACU and going 4-for-4 with three RBIs in a game on March 6. Over his last 10 games, he has five multi-hit performances and 15 RBIs.
Abilene Christian (9-9) bounced back from that loss to UIW by taking two of three from Loyola Marymount at home, capped by a 22-11 offensive explosion on Sunday. First baseman Grant Watkins powered that win, going 2-for-5 with two home runs and a career-high seven RBIs.
Watkins was quiet in the first meeting with UIW, going 1-for-3, but is 6-for-13 (.462) over his last four games with the two homers and seven RBIs coming in the most recent contest.
The Wildcats’ bullpen will aim for a sharper performance after the March 11 meeting saw UIW score in six different innings. ACU’s offense, which has scored 33 runs in its last two games, will test a Cardinals pitching staff that allowed 11 runs in Sunday’s loss.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this rematch projects to be a tighter affair, with a predicted final score of Incarnate Word 5, Abilene Christian 4.
Following Wednesday’s contest, both teams dive back into conference play. Incarnate Word hosts Nicholls State for a three-game series starting Friday. Abilene Christian hits the road for a weekend series at New Mexico.
